Summary

As World War I rages, there are evils—both living and dead—that only a witch can see in a spellbinding novel by the Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestselling author of The Raven Spell 。 With her husband off fighting at World War I’s eastern front, Petra Kurková embraces her fleeting freedom, roaming the city at night with her camera。 A born witch, she’s discovered that she can capture the souls of the dead on film。 Her supernatural skills don’t go unnoticed by the enigmatic Josef Svoboda。 He’s recruiting a team of sorcerers to infiltrate the front lines, where the bloodshed of combat has resurrected foul creatures。 Petra’s unique abilities will be needed against the most dangerous enemies of all—those ever present, undead, and unseen。 Deep in the cursed Carpathian Mountains, the ragtag team meets with an emissary of an ancient organization founded to maintain balance between worlds。 Photographing the escalating horrors is beyond anything Petra imagined。 So are the secrets among her fellow witches。 But Petra can’t turn back。 Not before she discovers her husband’s fate and the myriad ways her magic is manifesting。 To defeat an occult foe, Petra must release the power she’s been concealing for so long, or risk damning a war-torn world to ashes。

I was intrigued by the premise and witches actually needing to use items to cast their spells, but nothing really grabbed me for the entirety of the book。 It's damning that it took me almost a month to care enough to finish a 250 page novel。 I was intrigued by the premise and witches actually needing to use items to cast their spells, but nothing really grabbed me for the entirety of the book。 It's damning that it took me almost a month to care enough to finish a 250 page novel。 。。。more

Exciting readThe is historical fiction meets magic told be a skilled writer。 The story started a little slow to built who the characters each are。 Each character has skills and the story wove them together。 The setting is Europe during WW I。 The ending was exciting。 I’m looking forward to book 2。 Luanne Smith never disappoints。

4。0 What an interating premise! WWI and the front line where witches, vampires, werewolves are real! This was an action packed and exciting story。 I didn't want to put it down。 I wanted to know more about Petra, but her story comes to us in chunks and spread throughout the book, which was one step too far in telling us who she is (obviously rather than showing us)。 Can't wait to read pt 2, to see how Josef fares and if Petra's romance booms。 4。0 What an interating premise! Enjoyed this read but definitely struggled around the halfway mark to keep going。 I agree with most people that it’s the historical aspect that kept me hooked in。 I wish Petra was a stronger FMC, she felt a tad boring in some parts。 Overall, a decent read。

This was a dark, creepy, almost disturbing tale of a woman who has power and specifically, the power to capture the images of evil things with her camera。 Not always evil, sometimes just the departed。 Set in the absolutely frigid mountains during the ugly fighting of WWI, it will chill you to the bone! Not sure I am brave enough to continue the series, but this one was quite good, so maybe?

3。5! This was very interesting。 I don’t love zombies, but the character development helped draw me in regardless!

THE WITCH'S LENS by Luanne G。 Smith offers a captivating blend of World War I historical backdrop and supernatural intrigue。 Set against the brutal reality of war, Petra Kurková, a witch with a unique ability to capture souls on film, navigates a war-torn world with her magical prowess。 The narrative, while engaging, left a bittersweet taste, leaving me torn between enjoyment and a desire for a more comprehensive conclusion。 The protagonist, Petra, possesses compelling magic, though it somewhat THE WITCH'S LENS by Luanne G。 Smith offers a captivating blend of World War I historical backdrop and supernatural intrigue。 Set against the brutal reality of war, Petra Kurková, a witch with a unique ability to capture souls on film, navigates a war-torn world with her magical prowess。 The narrative, while engaging, left a bittersweet taste, leaving me torn between enjoyment and a desire for a more comprehensive conclusion。 The protagonist, Petra, possesses compelling magic, though it somewhat restricts her potency in the war context, presenting a nuanced perspective。 Despite the book's merits, I am hesitant about continuing the series and hope that this would have been a standalone。 Nevertheless, the story remains a worthy, albeit brief, read, offering a distinctive take on magic amidst the horrors of war。#bookstadog #poodlesofinstagram #doodlesofinstagram #furbabies #dogsofinstagram #bookstagram #dogsandbooks #bookishlife #bookishlove #bookstagrammer #books #booklover #bookish #bookaholic #reading #readersofinstagram #instaread #ilovebooks #bookishcanadians #canadianbookstagram #bookreviewer #bookcommunity #bibliophile #TheWitchsLens #LuanneGSmith #47North #FireflyBooks #historicalnovel #fantasybooks #bookreview 。。。more

This began quite well, and I really enjoyed the historical, eastern European setting。 The use of Prague and Slavic legends was quite nice。 The story seemed to outpace the writing a bit toward the end as all of the culminating action (including a witchy equivalent of a Mexican standoff!) got a little choppy, and I'm not sure I'll dive into book two as I can see the series veering into a more romantic setting。 This began quite well, and I really enjoyed the historical, eastern European setting。 The use of Prague and Slavic legends was quite nice。 The story seemed to outpace the writing a bit toward the end as all of the culminating action (including a witchy equivalent of a Mexican standoff!) got a little choppy, and I'm not sure I'll dive into book two as I can see the series veering into a more romantic setting。 。。。more

DNF, couldn’t get into it by the first quarter of it。 some things provoked my interest but overall i just cringed at a lot of scenes and explanations of the magic, etc。

This novel is set during a war with the living and the dead。 Magic, witches, and wizards alike are considered bad。 Petra is one of them and is recruited to join a team of misfits。 The storyline is amazing and I enjoy reading this novel。 Now settle down with a good cup of coffee/tea and be ready for the adventure ahead。

Loved reading the mesmerizing and engaging paranormal story。 While Petra's husband is gone fight in the war, Petra takes pictures of ghosts, but Josef needs Petra's help and other people with abilities fighting paranormal forces。 Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, and a must read riveting story。 Can't wait to read the next story in the series by the fabulous author, Luanne G。 Smith! Witch's lens is about a witch who can take pictures of spirits during WWI。 Although this was an important part of the plot, it wasn't explored as much as I hoped。 I really liked how old the magic in this book felt with Eastern European folk influences。 Witch's lens is about a witch who can take pictures of spirits during WWI。 Although this was an important part of the plot, it wasn't explored as much as I hoped。 I really liked how old the magic in this book felt with Eastern European folk influences。 。。。more

*audio book*I loved the concept of historical fiction mixed with witches, perfect for spooky season。 And it did start off strong but then there became too many interchangeable male characters and it all got a bit confusing and boring。 Which is a shame。 If it hasn’t been an audiobook, I would have DNF’d。

3-3。5 stars。 Petra has a talent: she can photograph the dead。 They don’t appear until she develops the film though so it is always a mystery as to what she will see。 How could this talent help fight in a war? Great question that while it is answered, it still has me wanting more。 I got this book as my Amazon First Reads for September with the intention of saving it for October。 I was excited based on the description to see/read a ton about Petra’s pictures。 And while they did play a pivotal role 3-3。5 stars。 Petra has a talent: she can photograph the dead。 They don’t appear until she develops the film though so it is always a mystery as to what she will see。 How could this talent help fight in a war? I read this so quickly。 A good spooky read for Halloween。 Anyone who knows me knows I love a zombie book with some layers and this delivers。 A witch who can photograph the dead with her camera is recruited to the front in WWI when the dead start rising from their graves。 I was equally spooked by the zombies and the horrible ways people treat each other especially during wars。 I was sometimes confused by the borders and semantics of this war (like who is a tzar and who is an emperor) but I suppos I read this so quickly。 A good spooky read for Halloween。 Anyone who knows me knows I love a zombie book with some layers and this delivers。 A witch who can photograph the dead with her camera is recruited to the front in WWI when the dead start rising from their graves。 I was equally spooked by the zombies and the horrible ways people treat each other especially during wars。 I was sometimes confused by the borders and semantics of this war (like who is a tzar and who is an emperor) but I suppose that’s also the point。 Everything is arbitrary and borders don’t really exist, and there’s nothing like a war to make that glaringly obvious。 Anyways I’ll def read the sequel。 TLDR if you want a quick spooky read with some secrets and magic then this is for you If you learned Harry Potter magic rules and don’t want to bother with new rules, or you find foreign phrases tiring this is not for you。 。。。more

Interesting premise but stayed surface level The premise and overall plot of this book was interesting and could have led to a great read, but instead it felt very surface level。 There are a couple of different plot turns that felt random, and I wish we’d gone deeper into the plot before getting there。 It felt like the plot twist was for the sake of having a plot twist, rather than one that fit into the story。 Ultimately, I think it would have been saved by more character development。 I didn’t r Interesting premise but stayed surface level The premise and overall plot of this book was interesting and could have led to a great read, but instead it felt very surface level。 There are a couple of different plot turns that felt random, and I wish we’d gone deeper into the plot before getting there。 It felt like the plot twist was for the sake of having a plot twist, rather than one that fit into the story。 Ultimately, I think it would have been saved by more character development。 I didn’t really feel connected to any of the characters or care what happened to them。 It did make for a good read during spooky season, however! 。。。more

If you are a fantasy reader, this book is for you!Great fantasy read with a wonderful cast of characters。 I did feel like she left the build up to the climax a little late into the story, but amazingly she did bring it to a closing。 Well worth reading。
